December 2021
When a country is in crisis, people live in fear, and if things get dangerous, they might have to turn to thinking about ways to escape. Throughout history, and even today, there have been major events that have led to refugee crises when the need for safety and shelter outweighs resources that may be available. Whether in a refugee camp, at a border crossing, on a journey, or finally safe in a new place, these picture books each tell the story of someone who is loved and cared for and needed a helping hand to get to a safer place. For most of our students, these experiences will likely be unfamiliar, and so through stories we can help them see another perspective and develop empathy for what kids might experience as refugees. During a time of year when many people are thinking about what they will get from others, I hope the timing of this list can also help kids think about what they can give, and what they can do to make everyone feel welcome. I hope you find some new books to share new perspectives during your #ClassroomBookADay read alouds this year!
And don’t forget to check out Part 1 from last month: Immigrant Stories.
I share some thoughts about this month’s topic, and highlight a few books, in the video below.
Follett’s Write to Connect program has selected the author & illustrator for My Two Border Towns for next year. Check out this page for more information on connecting your class with them!
Follett Classroom has partnered with me to spread the #ClassroomBookADay message. As part of that, my themed picture book recommendation lists are housed in Titlewave, one of my favorite free databases for looking up all things related to book information!
