November 2021
Other than the Native peoples who were living on this land before anyone else arrived, the United States is a nation of immigrants. And yet, throughout our history, and still in recent years, there have been numerous ways that some people and the government have tried to restrict immigrants’ rights and value. And yet, where would we be without the immigrants who have helped shaped this country, this culture, and this society? Focusing on a theme of Making Everyone Feel Welcome, this month is Part 1, which focuses on picture books stories about immigrants to the U.S. I hope you find some new books to share new perspectives during your #ClassroomBookADay read alouds this year! And be sure to come back next month for Part 2 on the theme.
I had the privilege of getting to chat with author Areli Morales and illustrator Luisa Uribe, the creators of one of this month’s fabulous books – Areli Is a Dreamer: A True Story by Areli Morales, a DACA Recipient. The heart and passion they both show for sharing this story came through so clearly. I so enjoyed getting to listen in on this conversation between them and to hear more of the heart behind this book.
As an extra bonus this month, Yuyi Morales, author/illustrator of another book on this month’s list – Bright Star – created a beautiful bookmark for Follett that you can print!
Follett Classroom has partnered with me to spread the #ClassroomBookADay message. As part of that, my themed picture book recommendation lists are housed in Titlewave, one of my favorite free databases for looking up all things related to book information!
